Gloss, Matte, Soft-Touch or Uncoated: Choosing a Finish

Gloss, Matte, Soft-Touch or Uncoated: Choosing a Finish

The finish changes how a piece looks, feels and photographs. Here's how to pick.

Gloss

Shiny, saturated colour, photos pop. Fingerprints show and it can glare under lights. Best for flyers, posters and anything photo-heavy.

Matte

Smooth, no glare, slightly muted colour. Easy to read and easy to write on with a ballpoint. The safe choice for menus, brochures and most business cards.

Soft-touch (velvet) laminate

A suede-like feel that people can't stop touching. Deepens dark colours. Best for premium cards, folders and book covers. Can scuff on very light designs.

Uncoated

Natural paper texture, absorbs ink for a softer look. Takes pen and pencil perfectly. Ideal for letterhead, notepads, and designs that want a handmade or heritage feel. Expect colours to print a touch lighter.

Combine with care

Matte with a spot-gloss logo is the classic pairing: the contrast draws the eye to one element. Beyond that, keep it simple.
