Paper Weights Explained: 80lb, 100lb, 16pt and What They Mean

Paper Weights Explained: 80lb, 100lb, 16pt and What They Mean

Paper weights are confusing because the industry uses two systems at once. Here's the short version so you can order with confidence.

Pounds (lb) is for text and cover papers

"80lb text" is the weight of 500 sheets at the paper's base size. Text papers (60lb to 100lb) are for flyers, letterhead and brochure interiors. Cover papers (80lb to 130lb) are stiffer and used for postcards, folders and covers. An 80lb cover is much heavier than an 80lb text, which is the main source of confusion.

Points (pt) is thickness

Business cards and rigid pieces are described in points, where 1pt is a thousandth of an inch. 14pt is a solid everyday card, 16pt is our standard, and 32pt is a statement piece.
